Pacific Marine Mammal Center Rise in Rescues
Pacific Marine Mammal Center Rise in Rescues
Published March 7 in Orange County Register:
There has been a large increase in the number of marine mammal rescues along the Orange County Coast this year. Pacific Marine Mammal Center has brought in 3 times as many sea lion pups as last year. These sea lions are emaciated and dehydrated. They also have brought in 10 dolphins from local beaches.
The warm water conditions, the storm wastewater run-off, and human-caused entanglements have contributed to the increased in the the number of marine mammals in need of rescue.
Rehabilitation of a sea lion pup costs the center approximately $2,500. Elephant seals cost them around $3,000 each.
They are reaching out with an urgent request for financial help from members and other supporters.
