City of Laguna Beach, March 25, 2020, Media Release
Laguna Beach, CA – On Tuesday, March 24, the Orange County Board of Supervisors took action to close public parking lots at all County beaches, trails and parks to slow the spread of coronavirus, effective immediately. Orange County Parks is implementing the closures to reinforce social distancing and reduce large public gatherings. These measures are in line with recommendations from federal, state and local health agencies.
Affected South Laguna Beach locations include the closure of parking lots at Aliso Beach and the pedestrian stairs/access points to Thousand Steps Beach, Table Rock, Camel Point, West Street Beach and Treasure Island Beach. The County parking lots at the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, Aliso & Wood Canyons Wilderness Park, Nix Nature Center, James Dilley, Willow, and Big Bend are now closed. Restrooms, playgrounds, exercise equipment, and shelters at all County parks and beaches are also closed.
“The City of Laguna Beach sincerely thanks Orange County Supervisor Lisa Bartlett for her efforts to ensure closure of parking lots and narrow pedestrian access points connected to our County beaches and parks to protect the public. These closures would not have happened without her leadership on this issue,” said Laguna Beach Mayor Bob Whalen. “Closing these access points will lessen overcrowded conditions at our local County beaches and trails, and help slow the spread of COVID-19.”
To protect the public and reduce the potential spread of the virus, the City of Laguna Beach closed all City beaches, adjacent parks (including Main Beach, Heisler, Crescent Bay and Treasure Island Parks) and area trailheads Tuesday. All City basketball, tennis and volleyball courts, along with all children’s playgrounds are also closed.
Governor Newsom’s stay at home order permits outdoor activity as long as a safe social distance of six-feet is maintained from people who are not part of the same household.
