Pacific Marine Mammal Center to Offer Free Virtual Field Trips to the Community

Free distance learning programs to help parents with children restricted to learning from home and people looking to connect

Laguna Beach, CA Friday, March 20, 2020 – During this unprecedented period of change where school districts and senior centers around the country have instructed everyone to stay home, Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC) is endeavoring to find ways to support the community as we adapt to the necessary social distancing in response to the COVID-19 virus.

To help parents needing to supplement their children’s education from home as well as individuals looking for ways to connect, beginning next week, PMMC will be offering free distance learning educational programs. “PMMC has been offering virtual field trips and distance learning programs since 2016. They are a great option when schools and families can’t visit us in person. When social distancing protocols were put into place, as a parent myself, I immediately thought of how overwhelmed families might be.” said Kirsten Donald, Director of Education. “Working parents now must also plan learning opportunities to keep children engaged at home. This is an opportunity to do our part in helping the community get through this difficult time.”

Starting next week, PMMC Distance Learning programs will allow participants to explore marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation as well as science and conservation curriculum through live, interactive webinars. This includes our “Stewards of the Sea” program that will expose children to how essential a clean watershed is to the functioning of our planet, and “Marine Mammal Senses”, a dynamic multimedia presentation comparing and contrasting sensory systems of marine mammals and humans, what they are used for and why they are different.

Each live presentation is 30-45 minutes, and will be live and limited to the first 100 sign ups. More than one individual may participate from each connection, but only 100 connections will be available per presentation. You can find more information about the different programs offered and information on how register here.

As we all navigate through these unknown times, PMMC would like to do our part for the health and well being of the community.
