Thurston Middle School – Bullet Investigation

On Monday, October 14, 2019, the Principal of Thurston Middle School contacted the Laguna Beach Police Department to report that two .22 caliber bullets were found on campus over the course of the day by separate students, one inside of a sixth-grade classroom and the other at an unknown location on the campus.
The Police Department School Resource Officer (SRO) contacted the school Principal to obtain additional information and begin an immediate investigation. As Laguna Beach Police Department Investigations were following up on the incident, the school notified investigators that a staff member had found a third .22 caliber bullet on Wednesday in another sixth-grade classroom.
As part of the ongoing investigation, officers from the Laguna Beach Police Department, as well as a specialized K9, completed a thorough search of the entire Thurston Middle School campus. The search team did not locate any additional ammunition after conducting a systematic and through search of the campus. Investigators have not received any information or discovered any evidence of a threat toward students or staff.
The Laguna Beach Police Department will continue to work with the school in an ongoing effort to provide the utmost safety to the students and residents of our community.
