Virtual Kidnapping Hits Laguna Beach
Phone scams for money are bad enough already, but now, these criminals are taking it to another level.
Imagine, picking up your phone only to hear the voice on the other end tell you they have kidnapped your child. Then, before you can even begin to process this unimaginable thought, they give you an ultimatum. You are to either wire $5000 to their Mexican bank account or your child dies. This is enough to stop your heart dead in its tracks.
With this particular phone scam though, the caller doesn’t really have the child. That’s why it’s known as “Virtual Kidnapping”.
This happened to one Laguna Beach resident.
